and God knows how many artist’s have covered and rendered this track.

We are always waiting for new artist’s to put their enthusiasm and skill to something that was done in the past and everybody likes something new so they were all hits because of the original art being so true to its nature.

So, i was going through the legendary 8th wonder of the world *YOUTUBE* and i find this “KALAAM” recited by our very own Living Legend Ma’am Abida Parveen. Her style and vocal impressions! Ufff! I was just moved by the way she expresses the lyrical content in those expressions. And then i ‘found’ some related videos to be of the same name and so, out of curiousity and that feeling on me compelled me to click the play button because i just had to! Mahr Ali Shah, the great sufi poet has left us some great works that are still alive in us. Including:
Tasfiah Mabain Sunni Wa Shi’ah,
Fatawa-e-Mehria,
Mulfuzaat-e-Mehria.
“Kithey Mahr-E-Ali, Kithey Teri Sana, Gustaakh Akhian Kithey Ja Ariyan”. Being one of his most read and recited works, still puts me in that sufi mode!

So, after Abida Parveen, i came across this roughly shot video of a band named “Aatish” in the suburbs and in some shots included of spiritualism. A mazaar, market place, some individuals trying to find their own peace. Anyways, the song started with some heavily tuned alaaaps, which were rather smooth to hear(otherwise there would have been some heavy criticism :P) and the song went along with a very strong feel! Acoustic lead guitars, distorted progression, and double rolled sequenced drums felt very catchy. Although the video was not the best rought cuts i’ve seen but the audio was pretty moving. And then it came to my mind that i have heard this song before, so I searched my library and Eureka! Mehr-e-Ali by Aatish. We found it! This song was released way back in 2006 and yes i downloaded it from PMR, 😛 .

Then again i found another video with the same name but the artist was changed, i decided to give it a try aswell. This time the band was named “irtiqa”. As soon as the audio started playing by jaw dropped! Okay i did not know the connection in between but the guitar notes were the same, same vocal tone(except a few improvements), almost the same drum sequence. I was in a little bit of shock cuz lets face it, it wasn’t metallica or linkin park doing it :P. But i was very swayed by this act. But i gave the audio the full chance, i heard the complete track :P. Yes, it was energetic, i had the feeling the track needed and i kinda liked it aswell :).

But! SONEY PE SUHAGA!
I go and turn my television on, flicking flicking flickin! Damn, nothing good was on so i decided to keep it to a music channel, P*** T.v :P.. And i see the weekly charts are going on, their programme PMC was airing. The host calls a band up on stage “Pukaar”. I have heard thier song Aag which was released recently, it had a nice feel to it. So, i stuck to the channel and drums kicked in with the lead guitars and NOW my jaw seriously dropped! This was the max i cuold have been shocked at an underground level thing! It was Mahr-e-Ali with the same drums course, guitars and almost the same vocal melody! Yes, i again i heard the track completely and i just had to come online to start investigating this dilemma!

I called up some of my contacts in the *Music Scene* and i was told a mixed set of comments on this song. Some claimed that the vocalist of aatish is now in irtiqa and he sung it at once so now he has the rights to perform it with his new band and some said that guitarist of pukaar was in aatish and he composed the track and he has the rights to have this track! I was a little amused by this controversy at the same time confused! As i work for pmr i was told to that we are going to release Mahr-e-Ali by Pukaar. But as i wasn’t sure i contacted my admin and 😐 yes shocked again to find that a Legal Adviser for Pukaar had called my dear dear admin his exact words were “they will pay for the rights in coming 2 3 days and us ke baad yeh song pukaar ka ho jaye ga till then dont launch irtiqa`s song. Meraa aap ko batana zarori tha takay aap ko baad main koi problem na ho”!

What the hell? PMR is a webzine which helps all struggling artists and provides a platform for talent to shine ‘Or ye horaha hai humare saath?” Pmr has always been promoting underground artists from Pakistan!

This was humilitaion to PMR and its team, jo dil se sirf artists ki promotion ki khatir artist ko promote kartay hain apna time lagatay hain and don’t even charge anything.. jo maslay hain in apas main solve karein bhui! Leikin ulta ek website per pressure daal rahay hain website ko politicise kar rahay hain and all which is not accpetable to PMR at all! Aur best baat yeh hai ke lawyer se phone us wakt karwaya jab in ke pass khud rights nahi thay. As we had no proof of who’s song it actually is we decided to postpone the release until we find the actually owner of this composition cuz’ nobody can own the lyrics 🙂

We still have no confirmation of who owns this track. If somebody has the *LEGAL* or legit documents to support this case please come forward and we’ll be happy to promote you 🙂

Ali Tabish.
